This Week's Question: Do you judge books by their covers?
My Answer:
Sometimes I do. I mean, who hasn't picked up a book just because it looked good? But just because we do judge books by their covers doesn't mean we should.
Because sometimes a beautiful cover can be hiding a horrible book, like with these:

And yet an unappealing cover can often be hiding a really good book, like with these:

I always end up picking up a book because of its cover, so I am guilty. If something is attractive to me, then I am more likely to pick it up.

I agree that sometimes amazing covers have stories that don't interest me and horrible covers sometimes have the best books.

ReplyDeleteI think we are all guilty of choosing a book because of its cover at least once!
Have a nice weekend.

You're so right. I love Holes! Such a good book. I find that b/c I do most of my book shopping online I'm less influenced by the covers and more influenced by the author/synopsis/reviews etc which is good. But if I'm in a shop I will be drawn to a nice cover!

I think we can all agree that even the most beautiful book cover can't sell a book if the writing's not there. Book cover art may, at best, help steer me in the book's direction (especially if I'm in a book store) but it's not going to hypnotize me into buying it right then and there.
ReplyDeleteI expound on all the marketing qualities of a good book. Just follow me back to my book blog - http://www.howardsherman.net

Haha, I love how simply you said that a great cover can be hiding a terrible book. Too true! I also agree with the exact three books you displayed.. so disappointing!
